The first words of the first song of this CD just popped out of my mouth
while staring out of a tour bus window in the Yucatan.
"And the lightning dances all over the sky, the tropical wind blows
and sounds like a sigh. The monkeys stopped swinging, the birds stopped
singing and everything grows still. Then crash the thunder it sounds like
a drum, you'd better hide you'd better run, because the rain is coming,
the rain is coming, the rain is coming."
I had no idea that this was beginning of a 16 songs musical that
would entertain audiences all over Southern California India and
would become a part of many rainforest units, school plays and would
helping to bring awareness of our need to preserve these essential rainforest
areas to thousands and thousand of children. .
In the rainforest the soil is so thin that if you chop or burn down a
tree the rain can wash away the soil and nothing can grow for hundreds
of years. I got the idea that I would write a musical puppet show about
a kid who came to the rainforest with his parents, who were both soil
scientist researching
how to help a damaged area.
The songs were released as a CD alone. However, I received so many
requests for the lyrics that I asked my friend, Suzanne Ross, author
and illustrator of "What's in the Rainforest A to Z," and illustrator
for numerous nature Dover Books, to help me design a lyric coloring books.
She brought her knowledge of the real animals in the
rainforest to the project and enjoyed added some
elements of the characters I had developed. Even adults like to color
her wondeful illustrations.
With the success of this lyric coloring book and cd,Suzanne Ross o illustrated
several of my thematic cds,"Dinosaur Dance""The
Grass is Green, a farm animal cd."
These edutain-ment books have been used to bring fun to the classroom
and have an ecology educational element as well.
